Media for the Children Award

Award Rules and Entry Requirements

Eligibility--Applicants for the Media for the Children award may be individuals or groups of either high school or college students who are enrolled in pertinent courses. Pertinent courses are any graphic design, multimedia, Web design, communications, computer applications, new media, or similar class at a high school, community college, art school, or university.

Content--To be considered for the award, entries must inform the public of research findings pertinent to K-12 school children. Each semester, the Electronic Scholar will post a topic and pertinent research about which the applicants will create a short public service announcement using new media. Topics for the 2001-02 academic year are listed below with links to pertinment research.

Acceptable Entry Formats--Applicants are encouraged to creatively use new media to explain or portray the research topic. Acceptable entry formats are: Web pages (800 by 600 or similar, browsers 4.x only), video (MiniDV only), digital videos and/or audios (QuickTime or Real only), or other multimedia (for example, Flash, Director, iShell, or QuickTime executables). Contact the Electronic Scholar to propose other acceptable entry formats.

Award Rules

1. Entries must be received before the end of the academic term (August 1, December 1, and May 1.) Winners will be announced as soon as possible but within 30 days.

2. Entries must contain 100 percent original artwork, photos, text, and computer code. If photographers models or narrators are used, proper release forms must be provided. Non-original music may be used, but permission to use both the published/copyrighted music and the artists/performers work must both be provided.

3. Entries must be accompanied by a typed cover letter of application with production details and credits. Pertinent screen shots or printouts are encouraged.

4. Entries must be viewable or readable in one minute or less. The exception is for Mini documentary videos which must be less than 5 minutes in length.

5. Enries must be submitted in digital format on the following media: 100 MB Zip disk, CD-R, or digital video tape, e.g., MiniDV.

6. Entries will be returned to the applicant only if a prepaid return mailer is enclosed with the original entry.

7. Award winners must grant to the Electronic Scholar exclusive electronic rights to display and use award winning media.
